The Company
Macfarlane Group PLC is the UK’s largest packaging distributor and we are seeking to hire an enthusiastic Trainee Sales Executive to join our highly successful team based at our Exeter site.  As a business, we are passionate about providing fully integrated and innovative packaging solutions augmented by outstanding customer service. As a Group we are continuing to grow significantly and therefore able to provide a structured career pathway for aspiring individuals.

The Trainee Sales Executive role
An exciting opportunity has arisen due to continued growth, enabling us to invest in the development of a Trainee Sales Executive who we can help to develop and flourish within the business and work alongside our successful sales team. Reporting into our Exeter site, the role will ultimately be concentrated on a set geographic territory within the Devon region, involving both the management and development of a portfolio of existing customer accounts, but also focussing upon new business generation via winning and on-boarding new customer accounts.

There will be plenty of support and encouragement from day one, including a dedicated mentor, extensive in-house training covering product knowledge and sales techniques, all underpinned by your enrolment on a dedicated external sales training course (14 months duration, accredited by APS – Association of Professional Sales). Your journey will begin with a structured introduction to our business, working initially within an internal sales capacity at our Exeter office, enabling you to gradually learn our sector and company procedures and processes. Once you are ready, we will then ease you into the external sales role. The plan ultimately will be for the lucky person to grow their own territory, reap the rewards and eventually become a fully-fledged sales executive in charge of an established territory by the end of their first year.

Trainee Sales Executive Key Duties
  • Act as the lead point of contact for your allocated regional customer portfolio, delivering excellent standards of customer service at all times.
  • Build & maintain key decision-maker/stakeholder relationships within customer accounts, executing an effective call-plan to undertake regular customer review meetings to aid tracking of changing needs and identify cross-sell/up-sell opportunities and promote new solutions and maximise account spend.
  • Pro-actively extend customer base via identification & targeting of new prospect accounts, this in line with agreed ‘new business’ annual sales target.

Do you have the correct profile?
We welcome applications from both University graduates & those educated to A-level standard (background of degree/A-levels is not important, although business related could be advantageous). You will ideally already have gained and honed good customer-facing/interpersonal and customer service skills from some previous employment (for example retail) and be keen to now transfer this into a business-to-business (B2B) sales environment.  As this will ultimately become an external sales role, you must also hold a valid UK driving licence. You will be inquisitive by nature, intelligent, articulate, well presented and able to proactively plan ahead. Working within a fast-paced, targeted environment will also appeal to you.  Above all else, you must have a strong desire to dedicate yourself to the sales profession… we are looking for people who want a proper, structured sales career path within a corporate environment.  This is what we can offer here at Macfarlane, so we need you to feel the same way about this excellent opportunity.

The Package
In return we offer a competitive basic starting salary (negotiable in line with qualifications & experience) along with an attractive performance/profit linked bonus scheme), company car and a flexible employee benefits scheme that includes: 25 days annual leave (rising up to 27 days with service plus all bank holidays), additional holiday purchasing scheme, contributory pension & employee discount scheme. Macfarlane Group is also dedicated to maximising every employee’s potential, by providing career development plans and pathways in an environment that fosters personal growth and continuous improvement.
